26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
Genesis 1:26-28, NKJV
Creation Day 6: Man
The skies light up with the sun, moon and stars, the winds blow across the seas, lakes, and rivers teeming with fish and water creatures. The grass, flowers, and trees wave in the winds. The animals munch contentedly on the green herbs, grass, and leaves. What a beautiful world God has created.
In verse 26 we are privy to a conversation between the members of the Godhead when they said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness." Man, God's great creation is to be made in His own image. As God's greatest creation, man will be given the duty of taking dominion over all that God has made: "Over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every crreeping thing that creeps on the earth."
So God, still on day 6, created man: male and female. God then blessed them and gave them this command. "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth."
So, though created on the same day as the creatures of this earth, man is not an animal. Animals were not created in the image of God, and animals were not given the command to take dominion over this earth. The teaching of evolution strips man of the glory God gave only to Him. No creature has ever or will ever evolve into a man.
The animals have life, but the animals do not have a living soul. Neither do the animals sin, but are, rather, creatures of instinct. Man, however, being made in the image of God, has a living soul. And, because man and woman are made in the image of God, they have the ability to understand right and wrong. They have a moral standing given to them by God. It is not man who chooses what is right and wrong, but rather, it is God who gives us the moral law and defines good and evil.
Let us then, as creatures made in the image of God, seek to know what that means for us. Let us spend time in God's Word studying this great God who chose to make us in His image. May we, by the grace of God, serve and honor Him all the days of our lives.
God has given to each of us a job to do. Part of taking dominion over this earth is spreading the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Through the sins of Adam and Eve, we all are born sinners, at enmity with God. Yet the Lord Jesus took upon Himself the sin of His people. So, in Him we appear as righteous before God.
Go then, in the strength and power of this great and wondrous God, and live this day to His honor and glory.
God Bless You,
