A Helper for Adam

18 And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” 19 Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.
21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.
23 And Adam said:
“This is now bone of my bones
And flesh of my flesh;
She shall be called Woman,
Because she was taken out of Man.”
24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
Genesis 2:18-25, NKJV

A Helper for Adam

After his creation by God, Adam was busy. God gave him the responsibility to name all of the creatures that God had created. Yet, something was missing. "But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him."

Adam needed a helper. Not just any helper would do, for this helper needed to be comparable to Adam.  What, then, did God do? God made Eve.

And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place.  Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.

Adam named his helper Woman because she was taken out of Man. God then stated, Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

All of this is very straightforward. Why, then, is there so much confusion in our day regarding the roles of men and women? Each person, in the married couple, has a specific purpose. While it may be true that God has placed the man as the head over the woman, that does not mean that she is inferior to him in any way. God made the woman comparable to Adam. He created the woman with dignity and honor.

Due to sin, we see God's order continually challenged. We see cultures in which women are treated worse than slaves or even dogs. Man, being the stronger physically, treats the woman shamefully. We also see cultures where the woman is continually seeking to overtake God's order. No man will rule over these women!

Both of these are these are anomalies of God's order for mankind. And, both of these are demeaning to the man as well as to the woman. In a marriage, the man has a God-given helper.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (NKJV) tells us,

 9 Two are better than one,
Because they have a good reward for their labor.
10 For if they fall, one will lift up his companion.
But woe to him who is alone when he falls,
For he has no one to help him up.
11 Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm;
But how can one be warm alone?
12 Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him.
And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

Let us carefully look to God's Word as our guide for living. When we see our culture deviate from God's Word, let us pray that we will not follow in like manner.

Does this mean that women cannot have careers or goals of their own? Not at all! God has given women great abilities which they are to develop and use for His glory. But, in a marriage, God has placed the woman under the man. In a sense, man is her umbrella of protections placed there by God Himself. How wonderful is that?

Let us go, then, this day and live for the honor and glory of God alone. As we see God's wondrous provision of a helper for Adam, may we see that God guides and directs us throughout all of our lives as well.

God Bless You,
Linda
