6I will freely sacrifice unto thee: I will praise thy name, O LORD; for it is good.
7For he hath delivered me out of all trouble: and mine eye hath seen his desire upon mine enemies.
(Psalm 54:6-7, King James Version)
The Lord is Good!
David began this Psalm in verse 1 with the words, "Save Me, O God," and he ended it with, "He hath delivered me out of all my trouble." No wonder he praised God saying, "The Lord is Good!"
Is God good to us today as well? Do our stories always have happy endings? Does God always gives us the things for which we ask? Even though the answer to the last two questions is probably, "No," the answer to the first question is definitely, "Yes!"
God is good today, just as He was good as evidenced by the historical accounts of both the Old and New Testaments. How can we say that, if God does not always give us the things for which we ask, and how can we say that, if all of our stories do not have happy endings?
David understood a deeper truth. Because God is good, He does not always answer our prayers in the way we think they should be answered. We do not consider over indulgent parents to be good parents; good parents always consider the true needs of their children, and understand that children do not always ask wisely.
God, who created and ordered this universe, understands more than we ever can, what is, or is not, good for us. He sees our entire lifespan before Him, and knows what is truly best for our eternal souls. We only see the events leading up to the present moment.
There are not many things in this life that are certain, but we can definitely say, with certainty, the Lord is good! In a world filled with chaos, death, immorality, and destruction, we can know the goodness of God!
Not only did this good God provide a way of salvation for man who was hopelessly lost, but He guides and protects His people all the days of their lives. Then, as if that was not enough, He ushers us into an eternity where all is perfect, just, and right! It is not just a fairy tale with a "happily ever after" ending. It is the truth!
Indeed, the Lord is good!
God Bless You,
