No Comforter

1 Then I returned and considered all the oppression that is done under the sun:

And look! The tears of the oppressed,
But they have no comforter—
On the side of their oppressors
there is power,
But they have no comforter.
2 Therefore I praised the dead who were already dead,
More than the living who are still alive.

3
Yet, better than both is he who has never existed,
Who has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.

(Ecclesiastes 4:1-3, New King James Version)

No Comforter

What would our world be like if there was no God? Somehow, it seems as that is exactly what Solomon is depicting in verses 1-3 of Ecclesiastes 4. Of course, we know there is a God, and that He watches over His flock with tender care.

What of those who are not believers? Where is the Comforter for them? Those who are oppressed have no comforter, and those who oppress them have no comforter. From that perspective, then, Solomon's words seem to ring true.

Therefore I praised the dead who were already dead,
More than the living who are still alive.

Yet, better than both is he who has never existed,
Who has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.

Man can do many marvelous things. We even see altruism abound all around us, but that is not enough! What value is there to this life if there is no life to come? What value is there to this life without out Comforter?

That is exactly why Christ came; and that is exactly why He needed to die in our place. We could not do it; we could not save ourselves.

Praise God that He did not leave us in such a hopeless state with no Comforter. The Comforter has come and He lives in the hearts of all believers. Our duty is not only to bathe in this comfort, but to share the news of this Comforter with others.

That is our purpose under the sun.

God Bless You,
Linda
