12 By a pillar of cloud you led them in the day, and by a pillar of fire in the night to light for them the way in which they should go. 13 You came down on Mount Sinai and spoke with them from heaven and gave them right rules and true laws, good statutes and commandments.
Nehemiah 9:12-13, English Standard Version
Light the Way
As we look at the word, "light", today you will note it is being used as a verb in Nehemiah 9 rather than a noun. As I was thinking about that, it impressed me that it is not just that Christ is our Light, but He also lights our way. Whether daytime or night, the light of God shines forth to show His children the way they should go.
How does He do this? Verse 13 tells us that God lights our way by giving us his rules, statutes, laws, and commandments.
What would you think of a person who was stumbling around in the dark, totally lost, refusing to turn on the flashlight they were holding in their hand? At best, it would be very foolish. Yet, that is exactly what Christians do when they do not immerse themselves in the Word of God. What a blessed generation we are! We have God's Word right before us, we have faithful churches and pastors who teach the Word of God, and we even have numerous Internet sites totally devoted to proclaiming the Word of God.
My son and I listen to the Bible most mornings before we start school. Yet, I do not know how many mornings I have decided to forgo Bible reading because we were short on time. That is to my shame. The truth is, the shorter we are on time, the more important it is to spend time together in the Word of God and let other things go.
I encourage you this day to let the Word of God light the way as you partake in the duties assigned to you by God this day.
The song, "You Light Up My Life," is probably one of the most beautiful love songs written, and yet how much more beautiful it is when we apply it to our relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.
God Bless You,
