10 He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.
2 Corinthians 9:10-11, English Standard Version
Bread for Food
I thought this was a very appropriate text to end our series of devotions on the word "bread." In some ways it seems to summarize what so many of the verses we have read have been saying. God provides bread for food. This verse is using the deeper sense of the word, meaning spiritual bread. Do we have what it takes in our own being to faithfully live for the Lord or to spread His Gospel to all the world? No!
As in all things, we are helpless apart from the Lord Jesus Christ. We are dependent upon God for everything! Why is that so hard for us to realize? Unfortunately, it often takes catastrophes for us to realize who we really are, and how helpless we are apart from God.
If God blesses us with a rich ministry for Him, is cause for us to be filled with pride and self-glory? Absolutely not! It is God who supplies seed for the sower and bread for food. It is He who will multiply our seed for sowing and increase the harvest of our righteousness.
Do you remember what the disciples asked Jesus? "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" We tend to look at great evangelists, missionaries, and pastors, and say, "Surely, they must be the greatest in God's kingdom." But is that true! Jesus pointed to the poor widow who gave the last coin she had to the Lord, and said that she had given the most because she gave all that she had.
As we face this day, let us ask the Lord for seed to make bread for food, that we may sow righteousness for the kingdom of God, for His glory and might alone.
What an amazing God we have!
God Bless You,
