The Crystal River

1 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. 3 No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever. 6 The angel said to me, "These words are trustworthy and true. The Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, sent his angel to show his servants the things that must soon take place."
Revelation 22:1-6, NIV

The Crystal River

What a fitting way to end this series of devotions on the word, "river." Revelation 22 paints the most beautiful picture of the New Jerusalem.

Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.

The closest I have come to seeing a crystal river was on a trip to the Rocky Mountains. High up in the mountains, the water flowing out from the mountain was crystal clear. Yet, as clear as water may appear on this earth, it is still contaminated water. All nature has been muddied by the sins of this world.

Yet in the New Jerusalem, it will not be so. There will be nothing to contaminate the new heavens and the new earth. Beside the crystal river will spring forth the tree of life bearing twelve crops of fruit, one for each month; its leaves will be used for the healing of the nations.

What else do we know about this city?

The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city. . . . There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light.

No matter how good life gets here on this earth, like the rivers and streams of this earth, it is tainted by sin. Only when we reach our eternal abode with the Lord our God will we see the crystal river, and will we experience a life without sin.

Only with God are all things possible.

God Bless You,
Linda
