Bread of Wickedness

14 Do not enter the path of the wicked,
and do not walk in the way of evil.
15 Avoid it; do not go on it;
turn away from it and pass on.
16 For they cannot sleep unless they have done wrong;
they are robbed of sleep unless they have made someone stumble.
17 For they eat the bread of wickedness
and drink the wine of violence.
18 But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn,
which shines brighter and brighter until full day.
Proverbs 4:14-18, English Standard Version

Bread of Wickedness

What kind of bread do you eat? I love to eat at Subway, but sometimes it takes me more time to decide what kind of bread I want, instead of what kind of sandwich I want. The Bible, as we can already see from this series on the word "bread," speaks of many kinds of bread. Our passage today from Proverbs 4, focuses on the bread of wickedness.

What things do we note about the wicked from the verses shown above?

*They cannot sleep unless they have done wrong.
*They are robbed of sleep unless they can make someone stumble.
*They eat the bread of wickedness.
*They drink the wine of violence.

Do you know people who fit this description? Is this also a temptation for Christians? It certainly is! Christians still have to fight with sin in their lives. If it were not possible for Christians to fall into these sins, why would the writer have admonished us with these words?

Do not enter the path of the wicked,
and do not walk in the way of evil.
Avoid it; do not go on it;
turn away from it and pass on.

That is our challenge for today; avoid the bread of wickedness.

Let us pray that, instead, our lives will exemplify Proverbs 4:18.

But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn,
which shines brighter and brighter until full day.

God Bless You,
Linda
