November 5: Matthew 23 & Luke 20-21
10 Then he said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11 There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven. 12 But before all this they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name's sake. 13 This will be your opportunity to bear witness. 14 Settle it therefore in your minds not to meditate beforehand how to answer, 15 for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict. 16 You will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and some of you they will put to death. 17 You will be hated by all for my name's sake. 18 But not a hair of your head will perish. 19 By your endurance you will gain your lives.
Why are we here and what is our end? Do we take our calling by God seriously?
What important questions to consider! Christ, the Son of God, was driven by one purpose, and that was to save a people for himself. As Christians we, too, have one true purpose, and that is to glorify God in our lives and, by his grace alone, advance his kingdom here on earth.
It has been a long time since the birth, death, and resurrection of Christ. How easy it is for Christians to become complacent and to think, "Yes, Christ is coming back some day, but it will not be in my lifetime." Are you sure?
Does it matter how much wealth, power, and pleasure Christians accumulate here on earth? If God has granted such wealth and power, to His children, what are they to do with it? From the moment they come to Christ, everything changes--their goals, their hopes, and their dreams.
As you read the passage shown above, ask yourself, "Do we see nation rising against nation, especially in the Mideast, do we see earthquakes increasing in various places, and do we see new diseases arising (such as AIDS) with no cure?"
What does this mean? Could Christ return in our lifetime? Oh, yes! Does that cause fear in our hearts when we consider the lot of the Christian as we come nearer to the end of time? Christ said this,
This will be your opportunity to bear witness. Settle it therefore in your minds not to meditate beforehand how to answer, for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict.
Along with the increase in wickedness, we will see an increase in hunger for the true Gospel. As you think on these things today, pray that God will be gracious to you and that your life would truly bear witness of the love of God in your heart.
And as Christians become the "enemies of state," pray that you would remain true to Christ.
God Bless You,
