The Light of Dawn

June 4: Proverbs 4-6

18 But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn,
which shines brighter and brighter until full day.
19 The way of the wicked is like deep darkness;
they do not know over what they stumble.

23 Keep your heart with all vigilance,
for from it flow the springs of life.
Proverbs 4:18-19 & 23

16 There are six things that the Lord hates,
seven that are an abomination to him:
17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
and hands that shed innocent blood,
18 a heart that devises wicked plans,
feet that make haste to run to evil,
19 a false witness who breathes out lies,
and one who sows discord among brothers.
Proverbs 6:16-19

The Light of Dawn

Like his father David, King Solomon was a very gifted writer, using imagery to illustrate his words of wisdom. In today's reading, Solomon continues with his discourse on wisdom, gives warnings against adultery, and gives some practical warnings regarding the daily Christian life.

In the book of Proverbs Solomon often illustrates points by using contrasts like he did in Proverbs 4:18 & 19.

18 But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn,
which shines brighter and brighter until full day.
19 The way of the wicked is like deep darkness;
they do not know over what they stumble
.

The life of the ungodly is one of darkness; throughout their life they stumble over things they are not able to see.

God does not keep His children in darkness; their path is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day. When does that full day arrive? The brightness will continue to grow until we reach heaven and live with Christ forever.

Does that mean that Christians do not stumble or go through dark times in their lives? Unfortunately, as long as we are plagued with our sin nature, we believers will struggle with many of the same issues as non-believers. However, because Christians walk in the light of dawn, as we continue our journey of life we will gain an understanding of our faithful Savior who guides us through the dark times.

Take a moment to read the seven things that the Lord hates which are listed in Proverbs 6:16-19.

17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
and hands that shed innocent blood,
18 a heart that devises wicked plans,
feet that make haste to run to evil,
19 a false witness who breathes out lies,
and one who sows discord among brothers
.

These are all common occurrences in our world today, but they have no place in the lives of believers. Go to Christ and pray that He will graciously keep you from these things.

Often these characteristics crop up in the lives of those in the church, and Satan gains a victory by causing the members to war against one another rather than spend their time spreading the Gospel to the lost around them.

I look forward to the next few days as we traverse through the book of Proverbs, written by the hand of God through the wisest man who ever lived upon this earth. Pray today that God would grant you the light of dawn to see and avoid the rocks and brambles of life strewn upon your path.

God Bless You,
Linda
